Well organized book shelves

When accessorizing bookshelves, remember to organize books by shape, color and type.  Vary vertical and horizontal placement and leave “white space” for accessory items such as decorative boxes, family photos or small paintings. Your shelves will add to your decor and avoid the tendency to appear cluttered.

"Raquel really tapped into my vision of what I wanted the baby's room to be. She created a space that is beautiful and functional, all within a budget and tight timeframe."

Interior Design Portfolio - Amy & Shawn's Baby's Room

The Challenge:

Room before Room Before

New mom-to-be, Amy, wanted her baby’s room color palette and design focus to be gender-neutral. She sought a contemporary look, but one that incorporated traditional furniture styles and fabrics.  Most importantly, Amy wanted the room to be as far away from “baby theme-y” as possible. The room originally served as a home office so the look and feel needed to be completely transformed.

Design Solution:

Floor Plan Wall Elevation
Floor Plan Wall Plan

Inspired by the balloon toy Amy had when she was a child, as well as the muted textures / colors of her mobile and Ferris wheel toys, we created a concept using decorative paper we found that features a stylized version of a hot air balloon. This became the jumping off point for the colors and fabrics in the space: peaches, yellows, oranges and a hint of celery green. We combined modern furniture pieces (a polished, white end table and parsons-style shelving) with traditional elements (cherry carved crib and changing table).

We further married the traditional with modern by creating an updated wainscoting treatment for the walls, using white larger-scale molding placed higher on the walls, with the custom balloon artwork in the center of each wall treatment.

The Result: “Modern Baby with a Nod to Traditional”
